Barça Femení captain Alexia Putellas is confident that the outcome of last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final against Wolfsburg will hold no significance as the two teams prepare to face off in this season’s final on Saturday.

Putellas speaking to DAZN about the influence from last years semi finals result:

I mean, starting with that, this is a final and what happened in matches last year against them, I don’t think that will have any influence.

What I’m saying is that it is a final, for them it’s an opportunity and for us it’s another opportunity.

In their previous encounter in 2022, Barcelona emerged victorious with a 5-3 aggregate score, including a 5-1 victory in the first leg at Spotify Camp Nou.

Alexia, a two-time Ballon d’Or winner, has recently returned from injury. The Barcelona captain experienced a severe ACL injury before the 2022 Women’s Euros. Putellas was the leading scorer in last season’s Champions League with 11 goals in 10 matches.

She boasts an impressive record of 100 caps and 27 goals for Spain. Her return from injury comes just ahead of the Women’s World Cup in three months’ time and just in time for UCL final.

The seven-time Spanish champion is expected to start in the Champions League final on 3 June, when Barca will face off against Wolfsburg.

“I’m lucky enough to live close to Alexia and be able to learn from her every day. Just watching her, seeing what she transmits to you in training makes you learn and become a better player.

“I’ve always noticed her because she scores a lot of goals. She’s a special and different kind of player,” added the 21-year-old center forward.

Barca teammate Claudia Pina told Reuters in a Zoom interview

Defeating Wolfsburg presents a challenge for Alexia and Pina as they face UEFA Women’s Champions League top scorer Ewa Pajor. The Polish striker has already scored 8 goals in the UCL this season.

In 2020 Lyon defeated Wolfsburg 3-1 in the Women’s Champions League final and marked the French club’s fifth consecutive title.

It will definitely help me prepare – me and our team, because I will want to share this with the girls ahead of the final.

In addition to Pajor, the Catalans will be up against Alexandra Popp. The German veteran has already scored 8 goals in 13 matches in the Frauen Bundesliga.

Barça’s style of play is difficult to play against, they pass the ball really well in triangles all the time,

We must be tactically very strong and very clever. I think we have the opportunity to definitely counter-act it and then show the German way on the pitch.
